Rob Handfield serves as the Bank of America University Distinguished Professor of Supply Chain Management at NC State University. He also acts as Executive Director of the Supply Chain Resource Cooperative. In addition, he serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Logistics online journal. He also works as Consulting Editor for the Journal of Operations Management, a leading journal in supply chain research. Moreover, he has authored several books, including FLOW (2022) and Supply Chain Immunity (2023). His earlier works include The LIVING Supply Chain (2017) and Introduction to Supply Chain Management (1999). That foundational book sold over 25,000 copies and was translated into Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
Education
Ph.D. Operations Management University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 1990
B.S. Statistics University of British Columbia 1985
B.S. Applied Mathematics University of British Columbia 1985
Area(s) of Expertise
Currently, Handfield researches ways to restructure public health response systems. This work builds on his pro bono service with the Joint Acquisition Task Force during COVID-19. Furthermore, he has secured over $10 million in external research funding. For example, the USDA awarded $200,000 for bio-based product forecasting. Additionally, the Templeton World Charity Foundation awarded $1.2 million to create an Ethical Apparel Index. He also received a $500,000 grant to explore serious gaming in supply chain resilience. Finally, the National Science Foundation has supported several of his supply chain management studies.
