Admissions
Am I qualified to apply to your graduate program?
If you are interested in our program, please apply and review the admissions requirements.
- If your GRE, TOEFL or IELTS scores are below the suggested minimum, you may want to retake the test.
- Applications will not be judged on one single factor. Instead, we will review all materials as a whole. In particular, your online application, statement of purpose, official test scores, transcripts, letters of recommendation and research experience will all be considered.
Is the GRE required to apply to the program?
Yes, IMSE requires GRE scores. You can add GRE scores to an application until a final admissions decision is made.
I would like to submit certificates of accomplishment, a resume and other documents. Where should I send them?
Submit all supplemental documents online through the North Carolina State Graduate School Online Application. Specifically, upload your Statement of Purpose in the “Personal Statement” section and your resume or any additional documents in the “Resume/CV” or “Other Documents” sections. Additionally, do not mail hard copy documents to IMSE or the Graduate School.
I would like to defer my admission to a future semester. How do I request a deferral?
You must submit all supplemental documents online through the North Carolina State Graduate School Online
To request to defer, you must email wjrwin@ncsu.edu and include:
- Your full name
- Your 9-digit NC State Student ID Number
- The program and semester you were admitted to
- The semester you would like to defer to

Graduate Admissions

We accept applications from students who have earned undergraduate degrees in engineering or related disciplines from accredited colleges or universities. The discipline does not have to be engineering, but it must include a strong engineering or mathematical curriculum. You will need to have some experience in:
- Mathematics (calculus)
- Computer Programming
- General manufacturing Processes
NC State handles applications at the university level through The Graduate School; therefore, it is essential to start your process there. Additionally, to be considered for admission into the IMSE Program, you must carefully follow our application procedures.
