Schedule

What are the differences between distance education and regular classes?

  • You are not required to visit campus for distance education courses, except for some exams. However, exam accommodations can be arranged if you are out of state.
  • Distance education tuition depends on the session in which you take the course. Be sure to check the University Cashier’s Office website for current pricing: http://treasurer.ofb.ncsu.edu/cashier/.
  • Distance education courses fulfill curriculum requirements just like regular courses.
  • It’s important to note that some on-campus courses may be listed as “internet” courses. These are not distance education courses but regular courses administered online. They will be billed at the regular course rate.
  • If you are an on-campus graduate student, you are not allowed to take distance courses during the Fall or Spring semesters. However, you may take one during the summer semester. To register, you will need to set up an online account. For help, contact the IMSE program coordinator, Bill Irwin at wjirwin@ncsu.edu.

Can I take more than 15 credit hours in a regular semester?

You may take up to 15 credit hours during the Fall or Spring semesters. However, if you wish to enroll in more than 15 credit hours, you must first obtain approval from the IMSE director. Additionally, you will need to complete the required forms for the Graduate School, College of Engineering and Registration and Records.

How can I submit a request for a Reduced Course Load?

Complete and submit a Reduced Course Load (RCL) Request.

Classes

I want to add/drop a course after the last day to add/drop. Can I do this?

  • Deadlines for adding or dropping courses are available here: https://studentservices.ncsu.edu/calendars/./.
  • For late course additions, approval is required from both the course instructor and the College of Engineering. You must complete a Schedule Revision Form to add the course.
  • Late course drops are only allowed under specific extenuating circumstances. To drop a course late, you must submit a Schedule Revision Form along with a letter addressed to the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs explaining your request. Include supporting documentation, such as doctor’s notes or counseling center notes.
  • If you have a legitimate reason to drop a course after the deadline, you should consult the University Counseling Center first.
  • For detailed university policy on late drops (withdrawals), refer to http://policies.ncsu.edu/regulation/reg-02-05-04.
  • You can obtain Schedule Revision Forms from the College of Engineering.
